Tips For Braces

It is important that you look after your braces and your teeth if you're to get the maximum benefit from your orthodontic treatment. Below are our recommendations on how best to do this.

Cleaning

It may sound obvious, but it's important to keep your teeth and braces clean. We recommend a small single tufted brush or an inter-dental tooth brush in addition to your normal tooth brush. Ensure you brush the area between your teeth and gums, underneath the wire. Disclosure tablets will help you to see any areas that you are missing. We also recommend that you use a mouth rinse containing flouride on a daily basis to minimise the risk of tooth decay.

Diet

It is important to cut down or preferably avoid sugary foods and fizzy drinks while wearing braces. Failure to do so can result in permanent  and unsightly enamal damage.

Breakages

Your brace is strong, but it will not withstand the abuse of eating hard, sticky and crunchy foods. All sweets must be avoided. Cut your food up into smaller pieces and take more time over eating. Slice apples, grate carrots etc. Any breakages will prolong your treatment.

Discomfort

Once your brace has been fitted your teeth may feel tight and uncomfortable. Take paracetamol or ibuprofen if required. This should not be necessary for more than a few days. You may find it hard to eat or speak properly in the first few days after the brace has been fitted as it may rub against the inside of your lips and cheek. This discomfort will soon pass. Place the wax provided over any areas of the brace that are rubbing.
